We should consider ourselves lucky that Efren and Joseph Boglio chose our backyard to open their first franchise outside the greater Chicago area. Why you ask? Because of their sublime deep-dish, double-crusted stuffed pizzas of course. Sound like a mouthful? Well, it is. The delectable doughy concoction, prepared with a thick and flaky crust, holds in a voluminous quantity of gooey cheese, and is made with just the right amount of sauce. In short, it's a pizza-lovers dream. Sure, they have thin-crust versions on their menu but stick with the stuffed version and you won't regret it. The owners, in fact, take full credit for originating the stuffed pizza (they opened their first pizzeria in Chicago's historic southside in 1974), but whether it's true or not is beside the point. Sandwiches, ranging from chicken parmesan to philly steak, as well as pasta dishes (the chicken lasagna is a particular favorite) are also offered. Health-conscious diners might want to opt for one of their salads, though the amount you get doesn't warrant the $6-$7 price tag.
The large warehouse-style restaurant with its exposed piping is adorned with posters, knick-knacks and curios embodying the Windy City's inimitable gusto, while the wood floors and red-and-white-checkered tablecloths give the place a cozy, welcoming feel. It's a fine setting for a lazy meal, but folks on the go can sink their teeth into real Chicago pies, too -- Giordano's takeout menu is popular with locals.
